Biography
Bio
Sebastián Errázuriz is widely recognized as the most performed living Latin American opera composer. A visionary creator, conductor, and producer, Errázuriz seamlessly bridges orchestral traditions with South American narrative and identity, positioning him as one of Chile’s most influential artistic voices on the international stage. In recognition of his transformative contributions to the performing arts, he was awarded the National Presidential Award for Performing Arts in Opera in 2022.
With a prolific catalog exceeding 600 works published by Filarmonika (USA) and Editorial MusicActual (Chile), Errázuriz’s music has been regularly programmed by leading orchestras worldwide since 1999. His acclaimed symphonic poem La Caravana has been performed in the U.S. by the Fort Worth Symphony and the Chicago Festival Orchestra under Maestro Miguel Harth-Bedoya, as well as across Argentina and Ecuador under Rodolfo Fischer, and recorded by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (KORK).
A pioneer in modern operatic creation, Errázuriz made history with the premiere of Viento Blanco at the prestigious Teatro Municipal de Santiago in 2008. His operatic repertoire—characterized by powerful dramatic pacing and critical acclaim—includes chamber operas such as Gloria (2013), Anticantata (2014), Papelucho (2015), Patagonia (2022), and Gloria del Canto (2026). Patagonia, a groundbreaking work reflecting regional history and indigenous perspectives, expanded its reach internationally with tours across Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Ílhavo.
Beyond opera, Errázuriz operates at the scale of massive public events and global spectacles. In 2023, he composed and produced the soundtrack for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games for Balich Wonder Studios, working alongside Artistic Director Hansel Cereza. In 2025, he was commissioned by Vibra Clásica to write Raíces y Alas, a monumental choral symphony premiered at the 2026 Gran Concierto por la Hermandad, featuring over 200 performers before an audience of more than 5,000 attendees.
As a conductor and musical director, Errázuriz served as Music Director for the Universidad San Sebastián Concert Season (2012–2019), Principal Conductor of the Los Lagos Regional Youth Symphony Orchestra (2022–2023), and guest director for Fundación Teatro del Lago’s Camerata Travesía (2024). He has been the Artistic Director of Ensamble MusicActual since 2013.
An equally versatile composer and producer for film and theater, his film scores include La Fuente, Blanca Oscuridad, Secas, and Free Fall Atacama, as well as music production for feature films like Fuga and Santos. His crossover work includes ballet commissions (Dos veces Bach for the Chilean National Ballet), symphonic pop/family projects (Mazapán Sinfónico with the Chilean National Symphony Orchestra), and large-scale community works like Cantata de los Oficios, involving 300 youth performers.
Since 2017, Errázuriz resides and composes in Frutillar, Chile, a UNESCO Creative City of Music.
